Off The Grid continues to stand apart in the crowded shooter market as it approaches its first anniversary following its July 2025 release. Developed by Gunzilla Games and led by Chief Visionary Officer Neill Blomkamp, the free to play “Extraction Royale” has maintained steady traction, reaching over 13,000 peak daily players on Steam. Set on the neon drenched Teardrop Island, the game blends cinematic worldbuilding with experimental gameplay systems that aim to redefine how players interact with both combat and customization.
At the heart of Off The Grid is its most distinctive feature: a fully modular character system that transforms players into customizable “death machines.” Rather than relying on traditional cosmetic skins, players take control of cybernetically enhanced fighters known as “Zeros,” who can swap out more than 30 different limbs in real time. Combat becomes deeply tactical, as players can shoot off enemy limbs and equip them mid match, inheriting their abilities and stats. This system, combined with a dynamic jetpack mechanic, introduces a level of verticality and unpredictability rarely seen in the genre.
Beyond its gameplay innovations, Off The Grid is also experimenting with digital ownership through an optional blockchain backed marketplace. Players can extract valuable blueprints during matches and convert them into tradable items, creating a player driven economy that extends beyond the battlefield. This system was recently highlighted during the Pioneer Cup tournament on March 1, 2026, where the winner received a rare in game asset known as the Tacoma Pioneer instead of a traditional cash prize, reinforcing the game’s focus on virtual asset value.
However, the game’s ambition has not come without challenges. Off The Grid currently holds a “Mixed” user rating, with performance issues being the most common criticism. The game’s demanding hardware requirements, including recommendations of up to 32GB of RAM and high end GPUs, have created a barrier for many players. Optimization remains a key focus for Gunzilla Games as they work to broaden accessibility and stabilize performance across a wider range of systems.

Looking forward, the developers have outlined two major pillars for the game’s future. A large scale narrative campaign, reportedly spanning up to 60 hours, aims to expand the game beyond its multiplayer roots and deliver a deeper story driven experience. At the same time, the introduction of premium content such as the Rockstar pack signals a shift toward a more structured live service model through OTG Pro, designed to support ongoing development.
With its gritty, cinematic tone reminiscent of Blomkamp’s earlier work and its willingness to challenge industry norms, Off The Grid has positioned itself as one of the more experimental titles in the live service space. Whether it can evolve from a niche success into a mainstream powerhouse will likely depend on how effectively it addresses its technical shortcomings and delivers on its ambitious roadmap in the months ahead.
