Not So Precious – LOTR: Gollum Is Now The Worst Rated Game of This Year

Alex KirtonMay 27, 20230

In an industry where competition is fierce and expectations are high, Daedelic Entertainment’s new game “The Lord Of The Rings: Gollum” falls woefully short, facing an onslaught of negative reviews. The stealth-based action-adventure game, which promised an interesting take on the iconic character Gollum, is proving to be a disappointment to critics and fans of the franchise alike.

The game’s development was first announced in 2019, sparking interest and anticipation among gamers, especially those enamored by the Tolkien universe. However, the journey to its eventual release was marred by multiple setbacks and delays, a harbinger, it seems, of the criticisms that were to come post-release.

In the realm of critical reviews, “The Lord Of The Rings: Gollum” finds itself in a precarious position. On Metacritic, the game’s PlayStation 5 version scrapes together an average critic score of just 38. The PC version fares slightly better, earning a Metacritic score of 43. These unimpressive scores place both versions at a lowly 295th and 296th on Metacritic’s ‘Best Video Games for 2023’ list.

GameSpot’s Sam Pape pulled no punches in his review, awarding the game a dismal rating of 2 out of 10. Pape’s critique was underscored by his frustration at the game’s numerous setbacks and difficulties, likening his experience of playing the game to Gollum’s troubled quest for the One Ring. Similarly, Aaron Bayne from Push Square offered another 2/10 rating, lambasting the game as a “broken mess” with few, if any, redeeming features.

Amidst the storm of criticism, “The Lord Of The Rings: Gollum” did manage to secure a relatively positive review from IGN Adria, who awarded it a 7/10 rating. The reviewer considered the game to be a “surprisingly competent 3D stealth platformer,” but was not shy in pointing out its underdeveloped visual presentation.

Overall, “The Lord Of The Rings: Gollum” appears to have missed the mark. Despite the allure of the beloved Tolkien universe, the game has been met with dissatisfaction and disappointment, even from the most dedicated Lord of the Rings fans. Whether Daedelic Entertainment can bounce back from this setback and deliver a game worthy of Middle-Earth’s lore in the future, remains to be seen.
