Take-Two CEO Says GTA 6 Could Use Artificial Intelligence In-Game

Alex KirtonMay 24, 20230

Take-Two Interactive’s CEO, Strauss Zelnick, recently discussed the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in the gaming industry, painting a picture of cautious optimism. While he acknowledges AI’s potential to enhance the efficiency of game development, Zelnick is steadfast in his belief that AI cannot replace the unique creative spark of human game developers.

Take-Two Interactive, acclaimed publisher of powerhouse franchises such as Grand Theft Auto, Borderlands, and Civilization, has been contemplating the optimal way to harness the power of AI in its development process. Fielding questions from investors, Zelnick expressed enthusiasm about AI’s potential but maintained that its role is primarily as a tool.

While he considers Take-Two to be a leader in the integration of AI within the gaming industry, Zelnick sees AI as an efficiency-enhancing tool. AI’s ability to simplify the game development process, he suggests, could be a game-changer. Despite this, he argues, the human element remains irreplaceable in creating hit games.

Zelnick’s comments echo the sentiments of Shuhei Yoshida, the former president of Sony Interactive Entertainment and current head of its Independent Developer Initiative. Yoshida also sees AI as a tool for developers, a means of creating “more beautiful things.”

However, the incorporation of AI in the gaming industry is not without controversy. Concerns that AI may replace human jobs are prevalent. Last year, Squanch Games was criticised for using AI art generation software to create game artwork. Additionally, veteran voice actor Troy Baker had to step back from a partnership with a company that used AI to create non-fungible tokens (NFTs) of actors’ voices. Despite the efficiency and novelty that AI brings, its place in the gaming world continues to be the subject of heated debate.
