Starfield Will Have Microtransactions According To ESRB Rating

Alex KirtonMay 10, 20231

Anticipation is brewing over Bethesda Game Studios’ forthcoming space RPG, Starfield. After a year of radio silence since its last showcase in 2022, the gaming giant is preparing to take the wraps off more gameplay in just over a month.

However, the excitement surrounding the game’s reveal comes with a side of controversy. Starfield’s recent rating by the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) brought to light the likelihood of microtransactions, a practice that has been the subject of considerable debate in the gaming industry. While some gamers find them innocuous, others express concerns about the potential for these add-ons to negatively affect gameplay or introduce pay-to-win mechanics.

Microtransactions typically offer players the opportunity to purchase additional items in full-priced games, from different currencies and cosmetic items to battle passes and beyond. The specifics of how Starfield will implement these transactions remain unknown, although Bethesda’s past practices may provide some insight.

In previous titles, such as Fallout 4 and The Elder Scrolls 5, Bethesda introduced the creation club – a marketplace with its own currency. This platform provides content like cosmetic items and gameplay additions, often developed in partnership with third-party creators. Speculation is rife that the creation club may return for Starfield, offering customization options for spaceships and character gear.

In addition to the microtransaction revelations, the ESRB rating also hints at the broad variety of weaponry that players can expect. From futuristic guns and lasers to axes, the game promises an expansive arsenal to keep combat fast-paced and engaging.

Set to launch on Xbox Series S|X and PC platforms, Starfield will also be accessible through Xbox Game Pass. Its release date, set for September 6, marks a significant milestone not just for Bethesda, but for Xbox as well.

With an amalgamation of excitement, speculation, and a pinch of controversy, Starfield is certainly a game to watch. As we approach its major reveal, gamers worldwide will undoubtedly keep their eyes on this space epic’s horizon, ready to embark on what promises to be a thrilling cosmic adventure.

If Fallout 76, Redfall, Gear 5 and Halo Infinite are indicators Bethesda and Microsoft will make sure to shove as many microtransactions into it as possible.
