DICE Denies Claims That It Is Abandoning Battlefield 2042

Alex KirtonSeptember 26, 20220

Rebecka Coutaz, Dice’s new General Manager had one of her first public interviews since joining the DICE team, and she made it clear what the future would look like for the development company.

Battlefield is one of DICE’s most well known game franchises, but they have also worked on others including, Mirror’s Edge and Star Wars Battlefront, two very big games with massive fan bases behind them. If what Coutaz said in her interview is true, then it could be a very long time before we see another entry into either of these franchises.

In an interview with GamesIndustry Coutaz said DICE has “no time” for any non-battlefield projects.

Battlefield 2042 recently released Season 1

“I want the team to be really proud about Battlefield 2042. That is what they are chasing and they have their heart and passion there.” Coutaz said.

It sounds like Coutaz believes DICE can get Battlefield 2042 back on track after a very rocky launch, noting that “DICE has spent over six months fixing and improving the game to the point where it felt confident to launch its first season of live content in early June.”

A brand new map was added to the game in Season 1, Exposure has been well received by the Battlefield community “the players are enjoying our map and the content that we have provided, so it’s a win for us and it makes us feel better” she said.

Jeff Grub, a journalist for Venture Beat recently reported that DICE has went into “abandon ship mode” and only had a skeleton crew working on the game to meet their DLC expectations.

On GrubbSnax today, I said that Battlefield is down to a skeleton crew that is trying to meet its DLC obligations. EA has reached out to say this is untrue. pic.twitter.com/Wpj79d9pMM

EA have denied this and seem to back up Coutaz when she says that the team are dedicated to turning the game around “We want DICE to be the number one spot for first-person shooter games in Europe, and one of the powerhouses in the world. It’s a fabulous team. We’re going to make magic together.”

Reviews for the game are still mostly negative according to Steam, so it looks like there is still a very long way to go if they do truly want the game to succeed.
