PlayStation are bringing ever more of their first-party exclusives to PC, starting with the massively popular PS4 exclusive Days Gone in Spring 2021.
Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan was quoted saying it “was a straight forward decision” to release more of Sony’s first party pc-ports. GQ reported that Days Gone would be the first game to be ported this year, Jim didn’t directly say this in his interview with them, but IGN later reached out to Sony who confirmed Days Gone was coming in Spring.
When Jim was asked why the company made the decision to start releasing PC ports of their console games he replied “We find ourselves in 2021 with our development studios and the games they make in better shape than they’ve ever been in before. Particularly from the latter half of the PS4 cycle our studios made some wonderful, great games.”
“There’s an opportunity to expose those games to a wider audience and recognise the economics of game development which are not always straight forward. The cost of making games goes up with each cycle, as the calibration of the IP has improved. Also, our ease of making it available to non-console owners has grown. So it’s a fairly straight forward decision for us to make.”
Horizon Zero Dawn was the first game to make the transition which Sony announced for PC back in 2020. SIE assessed the reaction to Horizon and used that in their decision making process. When talking about PC players Jim said “They liked it, and they bought it” and there was “no massive adverse reaction” from PlayStation players to the game going to PC. “We will continue to take mission steps in this direction” he added.
